  Hosting Teacher Speech on International Day of Persons with Disabilities

  - by Genevieve Ohlson de Fine, Head of Purple House

  Things that get us down:

  -A bad day at work

  -Bad news

  -Tooth ache

  -Coming down with flu

  Yet this is all very small in comparison to waking up every day and not being able to walk or use our arms. The very act of getting dressed or brushing our teeth or climbing a flight of stairs to most of us would be insurmountable should we ever find ourselves in this condition one day.

  International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3) is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992. It has been observed with varying degrees of success around the planet. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of people with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. Each year promotes a different theme.

  Themes from previous years have been:

  * 1998: "Arts, Culture and Independent Living"

  * 2002: "Independent Living and Sustainable Livelihoods"

  * 2004: "Nothing About Us Without Us" (a slogan used to communicate the idea that no policy should be decided by any representative without the full and direct participation of members of the group(s) affected by that policy)

  * 2007: "Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities"

  The theme of 2019 is currently:

  2019: "Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership”

  And finally, I’ll leave you with a quote:

  “The worst thing about a disability is that people see It before they see You” by Easter Seals.

  Let’s remember that deep inside us, past our physical form and our abilities, is the essence of our true selves. It helps to remember that when we encounter those with physical disabilities, they are a person in their own right, not their disability.

  Thank you, and enjoy having an amazing, physically-able day. Appreciate your very normal wonderful physical faculties.

  Some little friends, in their lifetime, can only be accompanied by darkness and silent companions. Some people even have a chaotic spiritual world. They have a common name-children with disabilities. On October 14, 1992, the forty-seventh session of the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution establishing December 3 as "World Day of Disabled Persons". On December 3 this year, we ushered in the 20th World Day of Disabled Persons.

  Many actions are easy for us, but a kind of extravagant hope for the handicapped; colorful colors are common to us, but a fantasy for the blind; the beautiful voice of nature is accustomed to us, A distant dream for the deaf.

  According to statistics, there are more than 60 million people with disabilities in our country. Due to their own dysfunction, there are still some people in the society who discriminate against and prejudice people with disabilities, making them face many difficulties in work, study, and life. Vulnerable groups who need care and help.

  At present, the basic lives of about 10 million poor people with disabilities in the country are not guaranteed. We enjoy the warm sunshine together and naturally give us the same feelings. However, life has given us different experiences, but they are hungry and eager. Warm and eager to browse the books as much as we do.

  Understanding, respecting, caring and helping disabled people are the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation. On the arrival of the 18th International Day of Disabled People, let us once again pay attention to the lives of disabled people, from removing obstacles on the blind road to learning a sentence.

  Sign language for greetings, and patiently listen to their difficult expressions.

  Let's build bridges with our hands, feel with our hearts, let love last forever, and let the sound of harmony echo farther!
